"Am I in a league of my own? Yes!"

It’s Black History Month and I have been seriously feeling my Black Girl Magic!

I have recently been put in a predicament I had not imagined or foreseen and the opportunity to either crumble or carry on presented itself. I chose the latter. My own ability to remain resilient is what I consider to be the core of Black Girl Magic, and something I have for so long admired about my own mother. Black Girl Magic for me is the epitome of remaining undefeated against all odds. The past week has allowed me to tap into strength I wasn’t even aware of and I can proudly say I, Aaliyah refuse to fall victim to someone else’s insecurities. When people fear your power and confidence they will do their very best to knock you down and make you question your worth. Well it’s wasted around here. I won’t have it, not today, tomorrow or the day after that.

Equally validating of what strength lies in being a black woman, I have watched the latest coverage of the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. Gymnast and Simone Biles’ record breaking wins. Following a week of controversy surrounding the decision by the International Gymnastics Federation's Women's Technical Committee, to water down points given to Biles in order to discourage her fellow gymnasts from trying skills they are not physically capable of doing, she has continued to come out on top at this event. It is inspiring to say the least, and a reminder that it’s imperative to not dim your own light in order to help someone else shine brighter.  Her success this week is a beautiful example of God’s always working in your favour. You may not see it straight away or even at all but he is always working. There have been many a moments I’ve questioned my own abilities and felt particularly frustrated when it feels like people are deliberately working against me. The worse part is knowing that something isn't right and feeling unable to prove it or even address it. For the most part I'd say to leave them too. The best energy spent is always on you. However, if you are put in a situation where your credibility is being put into question, do not be a victim.

With that, I say thank you and fxck you to anyone who has even dreamt of holding me back. I am laughing filthily.
